Yoga Therapy for Better Sleep

Rebalance your nervous system to get a good night’s rest.

With a good night’s sleep we have the energy and focus to do the things in life that are important to us. When we don’t sleep well for days or weeks at a time, it’s hard to have the mental or physical energy to get through the day.

When we are constantly busy, anxious, or stressed our sympathetic nervous system, our “fight or flight” system, is activated for long periods.  When this happens, our parasympathetic nervous system, our “rest and digest” system is underused and the vagus nerve which modulates this system is said to lack tone.

Over the course of seven weeks we’ll work towards transforming the nervous system to build vagal tone and promote better sleep.

We’ll discuss and define stress and consider ways of rethinking stress so the body processes it in a healthier manner.

This course includes lecture, discussion, yoga, relaxation and meditation.  We will reflect on habits that can help and hinder sleep.  You will have access to short home practices to support the work we do in class, working to balance and restore your nervous system.

Dr. Kim Callaghan, Naturopathic Doctor, will join us during week 2 for a naturopathic perspective on sleep challenges (visit her website).

Over 7 weeks we’ll explore:

  • Stress & the nervous system
  • Sleep hygiene
  • Mind/Body hygiene
  • The meaning of vagal tone and ways to build it
  • Off the mat micro practices
  • At home yoga, meditation, and relaxation practices
  • 3 am practices, quick fixes to help you transition back to sleep
  • Ways of shifting stress from a threat response to a challenge response

Join us as we spend seven weeks improving sleep hygiene, building better sleep habits, soothing the nervous system, practicing yoga and meditation to encourage better sleep.

As part of this course, please plan to do a gentle home yoga and meditation practice that will support the work we do in class.
